Women make up less than 1% of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ratedpeople.com\/local-carpenters-joiners\">carpenters<\/a> and less than 2% of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ratedpeople.com\/local-electricians\">electricians<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ratedpeople.com\/local-plumbers\">plumbers<\/a> are women. And of the 20 worst professions in the UK for the representation of women, more than half are trade jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This isn\u2019t right.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To discover the reasons behind the shockingly low representation of women in the trades industry, we spoke to school leavers about the careers advice they were given in school. We also listened to more than 600 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ratedpeople.com\/local-tradespeople\">tradespeople<\/a>&nbsp;across the UK. And we also spoke to thousands of homeowners about their attitudes to hiring tradeswomen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of the things we found out were shocking, and others encouraging. These include nursery nurses in first place, where women make up 98% of the UK workforce, childminders are in fourth position, school secretaries are sixth and teaching assistants are in seventh. She said: \u201cI don\u2019t feel comfortable as a woman going into other people\u2019s houses and I feel I would come under a lot of judgement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This, although a small sample, could indicate that one of the reasons why more women aren\u2019t getting into trades is because of how opportunities are communicated to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ratedpeople.com\/blog\/assets\/2022\/02\/wit-6.jpg\" alt=\"Woman decorator taking a break, sitting on the ground with a cup of tea. Glaziers and window fitters closely follow, as women earn just 52% of a man\u2019s salary (or 48% less).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Women electricians earn 54% of what men do. This could be a knock-on effect of so many people reevaluating their careers and jobs during the pandemic, but encouragingly, 32% of women across the UK say they\u2019d now potentially consider changing career to work as a tradeswoman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accesstraininguk.co.uk\/\">Access Training<\/a> also revealed that the admissions of women on trade courses increased by 27% in 2021, suggesting the tide is starting to change. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our research found that nearly half of UK homeowners (46%) say they would definitely hire a tradeswoman and 43% said that they would have no preference between hiring a tradesman or tradeswoman. Just 11% of UK homeowners said they would only look to hire a tradesman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also analysed Google search data to gauge homeowner demand for tradeswomen.
