If part of your ceiling has been damaged by cracks over time or by water damage from a bathroom above then it may not need entirely re-plastering. If there is no major damage and the ceiling is dry then an experienced plasterer will be able to apply a skim coat of plaster over the top of any imperfections to give you a smooth surface once again.
This newly skimmed surface can then be painted over or papered as you wish. The job of skimming should not take long and any experienced plasterer should be able to skim parts of, or the whole of the ceiling, and blend any patches to make a good match with the rest of the ceiling. This means that the job should be cost-effective and will not take long to complete. The price for the job will depend on how much of your ceiling needs skimming as well as how much preparation work needs to be done.
