Registered tradespeople carry a personal ID card, so check their licence number and expiry date. When tradespeople join us, a Gas Safe certification is one of the things we check. Only Gas Safe registered tradespeople\u00a0are able to purchase these types of job.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Part P<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Most electrical work in your property requires a tradesperson to have a Part P qualification. Ask to see proof of your tradesperson\u2019s Part P credentials. If you need to, you can also contact your local building authority\u00a0to check if someone is certified. In Scotland and Northern Ireland the Part P certificate isn\u2019t a requirement but it\u2019s definitely something to look out for if you want someone who sets themselves apart from the rest.<\/li>\n<li><strong>SafeContractor<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The SafeContractor blue seal of approval means that a tradesperson\u2019s procedures, policies, training and insurances have been rigorously audited by our partner SafeContractor. Tradespeople approved by SafeContractor have demonstrated a history of working to high levels of health and safety, giving you additional confidence when selecting a tradesperson.<\/li>\n<li><strong>TrustMark<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 TrustMark is the only government endorsed scheme for the trades industry and acts as a quality stamp for tradespeople who have this logo on their profile. Check their ratings to find out what experiences other homeowners have had. Tradespeople are rated on quality, reliability and value, meaning you can make a more informed decision on who to hire.\u00a0Read more about <a href=\"\/c\/how-it-works\/ratings-2\">how our ratings work<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Previous work<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Everyone makes decisions slightly differently but using previous work is a useful way of judging if someone is right for your job. For larger jobs, we recommend you ask to view the tradesperson\u2019s portfolio, speak to previous customers and if possible, visit previous jobs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ratedpeople.com\/c\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/checklist-estimate.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15359\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ratedpeople.com\/c\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/checklist-estimate.jpg\" alt=\"checklist-estimate\" width=\"756\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ratedpeople.com\/c\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/checklist-estimate.jpg 756w, https:\/\/www.ratedpeople.com\/c\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/checklist-estimate-300x159.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 756px) 100vw, 756px\" \/><\/a><\/h2>\n<h2>The contract<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"list list-checks--image padded-left-double;\" style=\"line-height: 1.5em; font-size: 1.1em;\">\n<li><strong>The quote<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Be clear on the difference between an estimate and a quote. An estimate is a rough price and is not binding. It\u2019s a useful starting point. However, before work starts, ask for a quotation for the work as discussed or agreed.\u00a0The quote should include a detailed job specification, price, conditions of work and a payment schedule.<\/li>\n<li><strong>VAT<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 It\u2019s a good idea to check if the quote you receive includes VAT. If it doesn\u2019t include VAT, you\u2019ll be paying 20% on top. Any good tradesperson will make this clear, but it\u2019s something to keep in mind.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Deposit<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 A deposit should always be documented with a detailed invoice. As a guide, a deposit should be less\u00a0than 20% of the overall job price but enough to cover the tradesperson\u2019s tools, materials and travel costs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Payment schedule<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 A quote should outline the payment schedule the tradesperson can expect during the job. This helps\u00a0to avoid any misunderstanding later on. Each stage of the payment schedule should be documented with an invoice, and should only cover work that has clearly been completed. Never pay the full cost of the job up front.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Subcontractors<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Not all tradespeople who do the quote carry out the work themselves. They may work alongside other subcontractors, or hire subcontractors to complete the entire job. While this is perfectly normal,\u00a0it\u2019s good to clarify this up front.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Guarantees<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 A tradesperson will guarantee their workmanship for a period of time.
