I have an electric oven and a gas hob installed 14 years ago. Will the existing cabling for the oven be adequate for a new electric hob to replace the gas hob?

Les Ward

Hi Richard The age of the cabling should not be a problem, it's the type of circuit and size of the wiring that is significant. If you have a cooker switch on the kitchen wall and a fuse or circuit breaker at your consumer unit (typically 30 or 32 Amps) that says 'cooker' then the existing circuit may be adequate for the additional load of an electric hob. I suggest that you get a registered electrician to visit your home and quote for the proposed installation. If you have the technical details of the hob you are planning to buy this will be useful.
