Storage heater fitting

Posted by Matt Shelley, on
I have bought a 1.7kW storage heater fitting. It works at 230-240V, but doesn't state a recommended amp rating. The instructions state not to attach it to 30A ring circuit or a fused spur. The MCB for the circuit that had the old heater on is rated at 16A. I plan to attach it to this circuit. There is only one other appliance attached to this circuit (approx 0.9kW). What rating double pole switch should I attach it too?

You can attach the heater to a fused spur with a fuse no greater than 13Amp. The total current in the circuit will be: 11.2 Amp (1700W/230V=7.3Amp for the heater and 900W/230V=3.9Amp for the other appliance). So the 16Amp MCB should be more than enough if the thickness of the cable in the circuit is 2.5mm2 which can withstand a current of 20Amp under normal conditions.

Hi . Current will be around 7.1 - 7,4 Amp so I suggest connected it via double pole fused switch min 16 Amp with 13 Amp fuse . Other appliance will take around 3,75 Amp so can not affect circuit with MCB 16 A. . I suggest to check also cable size . Bogdan ,, PROTON ,,
