Builder has asked for 50% payment upfront. Is this normal?

Posted by John Welch, on
Hi there I've received a quote for some garden decking and the chap has asked for 50% payment upfront. Is this normal and would I be covered if he didn't carry out the work?

Hello Joanne, Different people operate in different ways. I normally ask for a 25% deposit prior to starting work and the balance once the job is finished. Always make sure you get a written quotation which also has the address of the company you're using. Don't pay in cash and ask for a written receipt. If you're not happy about paying 50% up front (and to be honest I wouldn't be!!) tell the company this and if they're not willing to reduce the deposit then find someone else to do the job. In my opinion you should ask to see samples of his previous work pictures or reviews on here can help make your mind up and pay for materials only up front and labour when the work is completed.

Hi Joanne Ask for some references of work he has carried out, go and see the work that's been done and ask the previous customers how they paid for there's If you paid and he didn't carry out the work you would be another of dont get done get doms customers, in other words you've lost the money Iain

If you are at all unsure get your man to sign a simple contract. Write down the costs, the expected finish time and basics of the job. You sign an identical copy for him.

Hi, in my opinion it isn't typical. You should pay upfront for materials only, never for the labour. If the work lasts more than a week you can pay at the end of the week the first tranche (20-40%) and the rest after finishing work. Good luck Bozena
