RADIATOR COLD

Posted by RACHEL Griffin, on
My front room radiator is totalling cold however all other radiators are hot and the heating is working fine. I have bled all radiators. The temperature knob on the cold radiator is freely spinning which could be the problem?

Rachel. From your description of the cold radiator valve I'm guessing you have thermostatic valves. If the part with the numbers on it is loose then this is most likely why it's not getting hot. You can try and tighten the head by turning the chrome ring like part at the bottom of the head clockwise...(turn to the right to tighten, the left to loosen). On most thermostatic valves there is a triangle indicator to enable to know which number the valve is on, this should be at the front to enable allow you to know which number the valve is on clearly. Hope this helps. Robert.

That could well be the problem. Is it a thermostatic valve that is spinning freely? If so, it might be that it can be refitted to the valve. Failing that a replacement valve can be supplied and fitted for around 50-75 depending upon where you live.

Hi Rachael My name is Andy and you are right about the valve on the rad, if you have a pair of pliers or grips you can take the plastic knob off the top of the valve and try turning the metal spigot anti clockwise as this will open it up. If it won't move then it is seized and will need replacing which is a job for a plumber, please don't try this yourself if you are not sure what to do as you could end up with dirty water everywhere. Hope this helps Thanks Andy

Hello Rachel, Try turning off all your radiators but not the one with the issue. In most instances this should work and the radiator should heat up then turn all the others back on one at a time and re bleed the system. This is only a quick fix on most issues of this nature but a TRV or rad valve fault is more likely.

Sounds like you are describing a trv head that is loose, if you take the top of the valve off you should see a pin in the Center of the valve, if this is all the way down then it needs to be released. This can be done using a set of grips and applying some silicone grease to lubricate the pin. If it will not pop back up then the trv will need replacing , thanks tony @ sml gas ltd
