Leak under sink

Posted by Sam Crosby, on
Hi we have this sink: sauber 1.5 bowl stainless steel. ever since it was fitted it's been leaking a little, now alot worse. It's when the water drains through the waste pipes and looking at it I'm not sure the original plumber used the correct pipes (recall him having to change them due to depth of pipes provided), some of the connections seem loose etc. do you know which waste pipes we should be using so we can purchase and fit them/get them fitted? many thanks

Hi Sam I believe you will require inch & half/40mm pipe work min bore, solvent weld or push fit your choice, but first check all joints as it may be the plug waste leaking & running down the pipe. If this is the case remove the waste the trap is attached to this & silicon the lip of the waste replace & clean away the excess silicon. Regards Steve

40mm pipework!! Sometimes it's just as easy to take out the whole lot if tightening compression fittings doesn't resolve the leak. Purchase a 1.5 bowl waste kit which will have all the parts you need to replace. It's a good idea to take a picture of existing pipework on your phone and take along to plumbers merchant or diy store. The kits are adjustable do you'll need a sharp hacksaw and make sure you remove any dwarf from inside of cut tubing as this prevents debris building up in pipe. I did this exact job this week and found the pipe on one of the bowls was installed up side down meaning the locking but had nothing to lock against.

There should not be any loose fittings try tightening these also check that the rubber washers are on place if you have compression type fittings all pipe work should be 40mm it does help if all fittings and connections are from same manufacturer

Before buying anything try tightening up all the connections as the leak could be due to the loose connections. If this does not solve the problem then you need to buy 40mm waste fittings available at all plumbers merchants and any good DIY store.

Hi Sam By water reg kitchen sink should be connected with 40 mm waste pipe not 32 so please ignore that advice below. You can buy sink kit from B&Q Screwfix or any plumbers merchant compression fitting and is very easy to install. I hope this will help Best regards Rafal

I am guessing the waste pipe is maybe chrome PIPEWORK and fittings which are notorious for leaking. You could the white plastic waste pipe and the white plastic compression fittings, these are easy to cut and Install and are available at B and Q. The grey plastic fittings are push fit or need to be glued. I would go for the plastic compression fittings, they are usually 32mm size for sinks but check!

your best bet is to buy a new waste kit form one of the DIY sheds, or you could get one from the manufacturer of your sink if you go online.
