What a top bloke. Quick to arrange with a very decent quote. Turned up on time and was very good at explaining everything he was doing. Unfortunately Darren found a gas leak in the living room and made sure it was sage before leaving. Very happy from start to finish. 100% would hire him again. A bonus for me today was there were no hidden costs.

Just to reiterate the price was high due to the unpleasant nature of the job. Simon explained it was higher than anticipated due to the pipework involved under the floorboards (very tight space). This was explained by Simon before we accepted the quote. Sometimes a slightly higher price is justified, I believe this was one of those scenarios which is why we accepted the quote.

Gas Cooker / Hob - installation / repair specialists - what you need to know

Whether you’re planning a complete kitchen renovation, or just replacing a tired and rusty four-ring burner, fitting a new gas cooker or hob can have a huge impact on your kitchen.

Gas cookers and hobs are typically better to cook with, as they provide instant and more efficient heat than standard electric appliances. Installing a gas oven or hob can be quick and relatively inexpensive – but you’ll need the help of a professional. Not least because, legally, fitting any gas appliance requires a Gas Safe registered engineer to test and install it.

Installing a gas stove or hob as part of a new kitchen is relatively straightforward. You should expect your kitchen fitter to either have a Gas Safe engineer on staff or be able to work with a professional of your choosing. Either way, they’ll make sure the appliance has been fitted safely, and done so at the appropriate phase, saving you from any project management headaches.

If you’re just looking to have a new gas hob or oven installed into an existing kitchen, you won’t need a kitchen fitter – a Gas Safe registered plumber or heating engineer will be able to complete the work for you.

Cost of gas cooker and hob installation

Cookers

  • Budget: £150-£200
  • Expensive: £500-£800

Integrated hobs

  • Budget: £100
  • Expensive: £800-£1,000

Labour per day

  • Low: £125
  • Average: £175
  • High: £250+

Does gas hob or cooker installation require a plumber or heating engineer?

Both for legal and safety reasons – yes. Attempting to fit any gas appliance yourself is ill-advised, and simply not worth the risk. Aside from making sure it works properly, there’s a very real risk of gas leaks or carbon monoxide poisoning. That’s why it’s a legal requirement that gas appliances such as cookers and hobs are installed by Gas Safe registered professionals.

Do I need a plumber or heating engineer if I’m changing my electric hob or cooker to gas?

Any work on a gas appliance, no matter whether you’re removing it or just temporarily disconnecting and then reconnecting the same unit, needs a Gas Safe registered professional. So, if you’re changing from electric to gas (or vice versa), always look for a qualified expert to carry out the work.

The qualifications your tradesperson needs

You might be tired of hearing the phrase “Gas Safe” by now, but we can’t overemphasise the importance of this essential requirement for any tradesperson who’ll be working on your gas appliances.

In addition, if your job requires the removal of an old electric hob or stove, you may need an electrician who’s signed up to NICEIC – the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting.

City & Guilds and NVQ qualifications in plumbing or heating engineering are a useful credential, but your tradesperson doesn’t necessarily need to hold these.

Planning permission for gas cooker and hob installation

There are no planning permission considerations for gas hob or cooker installation work, unless it forms part of a kitchen extension, which may require its own planning approval.

Insurance for gas cooker and hob installation

Make sure your tradesperson has public liability insurance – protecting you and your property against any damage.

Questions you should ask your gas cooker and hob installer

  • Are they Gas Safe registered, and will they provide a Gas Safe certificate for the work?
  • Are they happy for you to buy the hob or cooker, or (if required) can they order and deliver the appliance as part of the work?
  • Can they provide a copy of their public liability insurance?
