Scaffolding is a temporary structure built from steel or aluminium components to support tradespeople, tools and materials whilst work is done on a building or house. You’ll need scaffolding for work at height that can’t be reached by a ladder or that’s easier to do from a more stable platform.
When you’ll need scaffolding
In most instances, scaffolding will be managed or sub-contracted by the tradespeople carrying out the building or remedial work to your property. In a small number of cases where you need to arrange scaffolding yourself, such as where you intend to carry out work on your property, you must use a builder or scaffolding specialist to erect the scaffolding. They will have had training and been deemed competent to do so.
What you need to know as a homeowner
There are extensive working at height regulations and whilst these don’t apply to homeowners (unless you’re working on your own home and the work places others at risk), you may want to ask your tradesperson about the precautions they take to reduce the risk of falls. This doesn’t necessarily mean scaffolding has to be used; harnesses and ladders can also be used.
