Tree stump grinding services near you – Rated People

If you’ve had a tree felled on your property, you may have been left with a stump… Not only can these stumps be unsightly, they may also serve as a breeding ground for parasites and fungi, jeopardising the overall health of your garden. Depending on the position of your tree, removing the stump will also clear space for future planting, or any landscaping plans you might have.

An experienced tree surgeon will be able to grind down any stumps, or remove them completely, using a stump grinding machine. This machine grinds the stump into chippings or mulch, which can be easily swept away.

You’ll be asked to specify how deep you would like the stump ground to. Shallow grinding of roughly 20-25cm below surface is usually sufficient for turf. You will be advised to go deeper – 30cm or more, if you plan on replanting or landscaping over the stump site.

If you’re looking to remove the stump entirely, your tree surgeon can use a combination of hand tools and stump grinder to cut and remove the stump, along with any lateral roots. This is a more labour intensive option, which will be reflected in the cost.

Though you may be tempted to tackle smaller stumps yourself, hiring a stump grinder for a DIY attempt is both expensive and risky for any stump over 5 inches. A professional tree surgeon will get the job done quickly and efficiently, preventing any future problems.

Cost of stump grinding and removal work

The cost of grinding is dependent on the size of the stump. The minimum charge is around £60 for a tree stump of 15inches (diameter) or less. Quotes will increase with the size of the stump but generally range from £60 to £120.

Stump removal is more expensive, as your tree surgeon will be negotiating different root systems. Cherry trees, for example, demand more complex treatment, as their roots are famously expansive. Stumps of this sort will take several hours to remove and the extra time required will be reflected in the cost.

The qualifications your tradesperson needs

There are no specific qualifications required to be a tree surgeon, with most training on the job. Many will gain the necessary experience as a grounds worker, or through a college course. A reputable tree surgeon will have a thorough knowledge of the various power tools involved, as well as ropes and harnesses.

Planning permission for stump grinding and removal jobs

No planning permission will be needed for stump grinding. It’s important to note that some trees can be protected by preservation orders, so make sure you speak to the council if you have one on your property.
