I feel like you've aimed this question at Rated People as a company that employs all the tradespeople here.
I can't answer you as a representative of Rated People but as an independent contractor and tradesman I can.
It depends on the job, the agreed price and the agreed terms of the quote.
Personally when I quote a job, I won't expect payment until the job has been completed satisfactorily.
However when I quote for a job over a set amount I will ask for a deposit to secure a date then depending how long the job is likely to take we may take staged payments. This however will all be communicated clearly and agreed before proceeding.
If this is the case, your tradesman should be able to give you a receipt or an updated invoice to reflect your payments to date.
