Painting and decorating is a great way of giving a room a lift. You don’t have to splash out a lot to create a more luxurious, dramatic or even an understated but classic look.
Painters and decorators are there not only to apply the paint or wallpaper but to advise on what you should go for to achieve the look you want. If you're stuck, they'll also be able to offer design advice and show you past work for inspiration.
Different painting effects:
Plastic bagging or cellophane painting
This effect is achieved by using the paint of your choice thinned out with a transparent glaze. After applying the base coat and leaving it to dry, get a friend to apply the glazed paint ahead of you whilst you go over the glaze with a plastic bag gradually dabbing the glaze to reveal the base coat underneath. To create an even effect, make sure you keep the plastic bag nicely crumpled.
Similar to cellophane painting, this technique uses a flat brush or rag and is achieved by applying gentle pressure to the glaze top-coat and using circular motion to create a cloudy effect.
Sponging on and sponging off are two great techniques for creating wall texture. Sponging off can create a basic reproduction of granite or marble. Sponging on is more effective when you use several colours and layer up the effect.

Decorating your home can be a lengthy and time consuming process. While some people prefer to do it themselves, it’s often worth hiring a painter and decorator to carry out the work for you. This is especially true if you lead a busy life or don’t feel confident that you can do a good job of home decorating yourself.
A professional painter and decorator can not only get the job done quickly to minimise the amount of upheaval in your daily life, but they can also ensure that it is done properly. Whether you want a single room repainted or wallpapered or are planning on extensive redecoration throughout the whole house, a skilled decorator can work to your specifications and get the job done. As well as actually carrying out the work, they can also give you advice and help with choosing colours and decorating styles.
As with many other trades, the price given for home decorating and painter jobs can vary greatly, as can the experience of the decorator. Before settling on one, be sure to get a selection of painting quotes and feedback from previous clients so that you’re choosing the best painter and decorator for your specific needs.
A good painter and decorator will have an in-depth knowledge of his trade, and will know many techniques that can make your home look unique. A vibrant mottled finish for example can be created using a number of different colours, and the ‘sponging’ technique. Wood graining effects can also be created, giving a natural and airy feel to a room.
Some painters can also paint artistic murals on walls, which can look great in a child’s bedroom and add a little extra fun to the d?cor.
