Making sure your new door is fully primed before painting it is probably the most important part to this DIY task. The level at which you prepare the door will determine the finish you achieve and your end result.

Level 2: Intermediate

Things you’ll need

  • Dust sheet
  • Putty knife
  • Wood putty
  • Sandpaper
  • Damp cloth
  • Primer
  • Small container
  • Paintbrush
  • Paint

The steps to follow

  1. First acclimatise the door to the room temperature and environment where they will be installed. This process should take around three days
  2. Cover the area where you’ll be working with a dust sheet
  3. Remove all door fixings and hardware
  4. Next, use a putty knife to fill any holes on the door with wood putty
  5. Sand the surface with fine grade sandpaper to remove any rough edges
  6. Clear the surface of dust and debris
  7. Start by painting a coat of primer on the door
  8. Let it dry before applying a second coat
  9. Allow the coat of primer to dry fully before applying your chosen colour
  10. To make the job easier, pour paint out into a small container and use a paint brush to paint the door
  11. Start by painting the door panels vertically with the grain
  12. When you’re finished painting the door panels, move on to painting the centre stile, followed by the horizontal rails
  13. Paint at least two coats of paint and let dry in between
  14. Apply a coat of topcoat and let it dry
  15. When the topcoat has fully dried, replace all the door’s fixings
  16. Finish by re-hanging the door
