How to tell a load bearing wall?

Posted by Steve Barry, on
We have built in wardrobes in our bedrooms. We want to remove them to open up the space and have so far removed the doors and the frame. We are left with an alcove due to a a concrete side wall which runs out from the main wall (about 3ft long). This wall appears to have been built during the construction of the block of flats. How can we find out if this is a load bearing or retaining wall?

Hi Steve if the wall is solid concrete not built in blocks then it will definitely be structural, you can contact a structural engineer for their opinion. You would also need the freeholders permission to make any changes to the wall. Ed
