Wired in stereo system

Posted by James Fleming, on
I have recently purchased a house and inherited a wired in stereo system, there are speakers in a number of rooms, but just one outlet that is a bundle of wires. How can I understand the system and wires, would an electrician do this or do I need a specialist sound engineer? Pls advise

Hi James, Each of those cables represents a zone. Also each of your rooms is a zone. You only need an sound system with multiple sources and multiple zones. Most electricians can identify which cables is for which room and then terminate the cables into the back of your sound system. If the system is wired with speaker cables then to identify them is easy. If the system is wired in CAT6 then to identify which wires were used makes it a bit more difficult and that means you might need advice from a sound engineer to tell you what sound system to buy because in this case, the audio signal will be distributed as digital audio. Hope this helps,
