Lath and plaster ceiling.

I have a Lath and plaster ceiling in a small bedroom, roughly 2m x 4m. Some of the plaster has fallen off and other sections look loose. I plan on puting up new plasterboard, but am not sure if I need to remove the old plaster first or can I just leave it in place and screw the new plasterboard directly onto it and into the joists?
