|Dripping tap or shower||£50||£100|
A dripping tap or shower is never the most serious of plumbing problems. But what dripping taps and shower heads lack in terms of urgency of need to repair, they make up for in terms of irritation. For this reason it is always best to get the problem dealt with as soon as you can, as a qualified plumber will quickly fix your taps and end the constant dripping sound.
Early treatment of the problem is also best for your taps and shower, as the problem will only get worse and those in hard water areas are likely to experience more of a build-up of calcium on their taps and shower heads. This can be unsightly and definitely stops the taps working as well.
Your plumber will take a dripping tap apart to see what the problem is. This is usually the washer or, in more modern taps, a cylinder or mixer mechanism. These parts can usually be replaced and your plumber will have any standard parts with him when he calls. Although he may advise you that it can be cheaper to replace cheap taps than to replace the cylinder or mixer mechanism.
Worn washers are the main cause of shower drips, but they can also spring leaks in the shower hose, which can cause drips. Your plumber will take the shower head apart and see what the problem is. Calcium build-up is a major cause of drips too, so make sure that you maintain your shower head with a calcium cleaning product or a natural alternative such as white vinegar. Always make sure the shower head is tightly secured before you call out your plumber to deal with with drips.
