What would be the best foundation for a single story, single room extension which is sat on backfill rather than subsoil or bedrock? be greatful for ideas.

You will have to dig a pilot hole and consult your Local Authority Building Control as they will ultimately decide on the depth of your foundation. You will have to dig down until you hit solid ground.
