What is best, soffit capping or complete replacement?

We have been given different advice on this question and would appreciate some further help. We have been told that capping is OK, or that capping is OK if the wood is sound or if any rotting wood is first replaced. We have also been told that capping is a bad idea in any situation because it causes "sweating" problems and hence rot. What should we do?
