Remove the bricks to make the fireplace square inside

Hello,
Currently within my fireplace I have bricks pointing in a triangle shape.
I want to remove these bricks to make the inside to be square so i can fit a square log basket in it.

Behind the bricks is a gap and they are only four/five high (i can fit my hand over the top and down the back of them).
Would this be ok or would it affect the flow?
