There is no problem with putting the air tick on the outside. Make certain that the top of the chimney is also ventilated and rain cannot get in.

Hi I would like to seal up a disused fireplace I know I will have to ventilate the chimney can I put the airbrick on the outside wall at the base as I don't want to see the airbrick on the inside. Thanks Alex.
