Opening up a Bricked up fireplace

Posted by Tom B, on
I've opened up a bricked up fireplace and found bricks that seem to fill the fireplace and channel upto the flue. I want to install a decorative fire but am unsure if these bricks can be removed to create a "hole in the wall" style fire opening. My chimney breast is external to the house. Opening up the fireplace I would have expected a void to install a wood burner or such.

Firstly one has to determine if the bricks are holding up the chimney, if you can't do that, pay an expert to examine it. The people that supply the fireplace might know someone.
