Vertical cracks in inner leaf of gable end walls - is this a problem?

Posted by Martin Dixon, on
In June we found some cracks in the gable end walls in our loft. These extend vertically thorugh a couple of coures through the blocks themselves ans then trace through the mortar joints, probably to the top course of blocks. Some of the blocks also have some movement in them. One one gable the crack is approx 2mm wide and on the other 1mm wide. Structural Engineer has said prob thermal movement and movement in wind - recommends gable wall restraints. Not subsidence! 2 builders have said typical for these walls this age made of lightweight thermal blocks - just leave alone. However I'm worried we should do something - another professional opinion? We did have a bathroom refurbed immediatley below the worst of the cracks, which involved knocking off all of the plaster also, back to bare blocks on 2 internal walls. This created a lot of vibration - could this have caused the cracking in the gables?

If you are worried by these it can be resolved by inserting Helifix rods into the mortar joints at intervals along the crack I would be happy to quote for the work
