How do i turn a doorway into an arch?

Posted by Elizabeth Hughes, on
Hi. I am wondering what would be involved in turning a doorway into an arch. The current door is of standard width, and i am not looking to widen the gap to make the archway. I was originally just going to take the door off, but I think it will look nicer as an arch. I believe that you can get pre-fabricated archways, but then i am not sure when installed how to get a good quality finish e.g. the moulding will be made of one material and then the walls would need to be plaster finished - so they might look odd. Alternatively I dont know if these mouldings can be plastered and how good that would look. Alternatively it has been suggested to me to get a large strip of upvc which will bend and then attach this from floor to floor either side and let it naturally mould to the shape created, however, i am not sure if is possible to buy this to the exact width i would need - so that it would be machine finished on both sides. Alternatively - there might be ideas that i havent thought of. We were originally going to do this ourselves, but think now it would be better to get someone in to do it - but i am not sure what to ask for in terms of what i want or whether i would need a builder or a decorator to do this or what it would be likely to cost. I know that i want a nice quality finish - but would welcome any advice on what would need to be done. Thanks.
