Damp in a chimney breast and walls

Posted by Kirsty Tonks, on
Hi, the damp is in the chimney breast and side and end walls of end terrace house. Plaster blown in chimney breast. It seemed to be downstairs originally but is now on end/side wall in bedroom upstairs. Who should I ask to investigate - builder or roofer? Thank you.

You should ask a builder or plasterer to fix it but first ask them if they know about ammonium sulphate contamination before they do any work , this is the cause of the problem , if they don't know about this , get a damp proofing company and ask the same question until you find a knowlageble person , you could waste plenty of money on not fixing it !

Hi Kirsty, I would always say roofer, because it sounds like your chimney breast needs pointing or flashing or capping! and although a builder is capable of doing this type of job, they have to have a good head for heights, and are able to work under the stress of working at height. and don't become more focused on their safety instead of doing a good job! Regards Sam
