Dampness in kitchen cabinets.

Posted by Jackie Melsom, on
I have dampness in the corner of my kitchen (two external walls and a roof above) which has affected the cabinets and it has caused mould /damp which seems to have "crept" along the wall affecting other cabinets. It disappeared over the summer but has reappeared (rapidly) in the last few weeks. Is this likely to be a damp problem with the wall or a problem with condensation? It would be helpful to have some advice before I contact tradesmen to look at it.

This is unlikely to be a damp problem but probably a plaster thickness problem absorbing humidity in winter or on cold days . A quick test will answer this , make a small hole un the wall with a screwdriver , measure the thickness of the plaster , if it's more than 3mm , that will be the problem . Plaster absorbs humidity if it's over 2mm in thickness .

Hello Jackie, if the roof over the kitchen is flat, I would suspect its due to a leak, as it can often be mistaken for damp, because it tends to seep slowly rather than gush or drip. And will ingress into the cavity wall. I hope this helps! Regards Sam
