Widen a chimney hole to fit decorative chimney place?

Posted by Beth Farminer, on
Need to widen a chimney hole to fit a new decorative chimney place - Currently space is 10" by 16" needs to be 19" by 23". Purely decorative - Does this need a builder and supports etc or can the extra bricks just be cut out? Any advice appreciated

Hi, ideally you would have to fit a small lintel above the hole to support the weight of the bricks, If you look on the existing brick work under the render, there should be a thin metal lintel above it. You could fit something simillar above the new hole, the new lintel or steel plate needs to overlap on to each side of the new whole around 10/15cm each side. Regards Martin Ms interiors
