Rot in roof truss

Posted by Richard Staite, on
I have taken down a partition wall in a loft conversion and have discovered an area of rot in a roof truss adjacent to the chimney. I need advise to determine the extent of the damage and what redial work is necessary.

there will be some kind of leakage behind the partition where the roof meets it , this will be very easy to solve due to the location . hope that helps

HI, You will need to get all roof timbers inspected to see the extent of the problem, although you could cut out area of rot and bolt in another timber alongside for a quick fix to this one timber make sure it is treated C24 grade. Best Wishes, Adrian, Freeman and Green

Hi Richard My advise would be to get a specialist company in to inspect the timbers as left untreated could be more expensive if left untreated, but that depends on what type of rot you have.. A simple job to repair so best to get timbers looked at . Hope that helps Regards Barry

Richard. If it's wet rot which I suspect it is, simply cut out the old section and replace. Make sure you cure the source of the dampness. However if it's dry rot this is quite another matter and the fruiting body needs to be terminated and the spores killed off.best get an expert in if this is the case.

Hi Richard You need to contact a specialist in timber decay and dampness, who will identify the type of rot and the source of the dampness that has caused the decay. Remedial work is normally to cut out the rot, treat the timber, repair the truss, possibly with steel re-inforcement and remove the source of dampness. Best Regards David
