That's a 20% deposit on a rather small value job . Personally we wouldn't charge a deposit unless a special order item is required at customer spec

If a builder ask for a deposit on a small job like that it doesn't say much about the builder I don't take deposits no matter what size the jobs are good luck

Hi Tracey I bet your even more confused than before you asked the question! It really is simple, if you have done all you homework with regards to your contractor (which I will assume you have) and you are happy with the contractor and the quote then paying a deposit of 20% is absolutely fine if you are happy to do it. Make sure you get a receipt and ensure there is a paper trail if things go wrong, which they shouldn't if you have done your homework. If your not comfortable with paying any money up front then tell your contractor, if they insist, you have a choice pay or use another contractor. You must remember that the contractor is also trusting 'you' with a larger amount of money to be paid at the end :~)

Hi Tracey, The deposit seems totally reasonable to me your builder has to invest his time and efforts before receiving his full payment. If you are using someone of this site then you have the means to look at his feed back. Regards Andy Thornton

May just be for materials some builders dont have a big enough float to pay for it themselves so to me its pretty reasonable .

We take a 20% deposit as standard to pay for things like skips and scaffolding so they're ready for us to start it may seem unfair but when you have 5-6 scaffolds up at around £5-800 a time it soon mounts up Hope this helps Scott Weathertech roofing
