Likely cause. Water getting behind fashing. A breakdown with chimney render . Flashing or slates/tiles etc. A quick investigation by a good roofer will tell you in min's. Donald

Chimney is wet on one side. in the loft what could be wrong

The chimney may be leaking , The flashing may be faulty , If the chimney is capped , it may need ventilating . You need to do a bit more investigation .
