Stud partition wall

Posted by Jennie Parker, on
I would like to remove the stud partition wall that forms the cupboard under my stairs. It looks like a typical stud wall, but I do not know if it is load bearing. The stairs are half open at the bottom, whereas the wall to the bedroom above blocks the stairs in at the top. So effectively half of the ceiling has no support. Is there a way of telling? I have removed all of the plasterboard and directly above the top horizontal piece runs another beam running the length of the house Grateful for any advice you can offer.

Hi Jennie its quite common on older properties for the stud wall under the stairs to provide support to the 1st floor joists/stairs, the beam is probably the trimmer joist for the stairs you need to make sure that this is properly supported either on brickwork or from joists at right angles to its self.If you are unsure it's best to get a competent person to take a look before you make any alterations, you could contact your local building control to ask if they would come out to inspect. Hope this helps. Ed
