Steel beam to replace load bearing wall.

Posted by Oliver Jones, on
I have been told by a builder that to replace a load bearing wall with a steel beam requires calculations from a structural engineer. Is this correct?

Hi Oliver the buider gave you correct information, calculations are needed to workout the loading and determine the correct size of the steel required. Building control may want to look at calculations so best to do it properly.Ed

Hi Oliver Yes you will need calculations to submit to LA building control, don`t go ahead without these its money well spent, I would expect to pay around £250 for calcs for one wall removal. Kind regards Ian Handyman express

yes this is true, you will also need it be done to current building regulations, which means getting the council involved. it will need to have 1 hour fire protection. fire causes steel beams to buckle and twist which could mean the support being compromised.
