Hi Tim. All Basement conversions should be carried out in accordance with the relevant British Standard. This is BS.8102 Code of practice for protection of below ground structures against water from the ground. This British standard allows two options for conversion: 1. Type A (barrier) protection. 2. Type C (drained) protection. Type A would consist of a cement based render which is applied in several coats. Type C is a waterproof membrane system. I would advise that this is not a job for a general builder as this type of conversion will require a long term warranty from a specialist organisation. The other aspect to be aware of is building regulations and change of use. A good waterproofing company would be able to advise you on this. I would recommend that you post the job on rated people with a budget of around £5000. I know that this seems high, but if its worth doing, then do it right. Best Wishes Peter Barber CSSW.,CRDS.
