Cellar extension

Posted by Michael Skene, on
Do you need planning permission to extend a cellar?I am looking at a bungalow which had a large cupboard/small room underneath at the rear. A builder has dug about 2 or 3 meters further under the House to create a full sized cellar. He has bolstered the foundation internally by forming concrete blocks about a meter high where he has dug. House is on a chalk front to rear slope and access is external at rear.

Hi Michael. It is doubtful that you will need planning permission unless you are changing the external appearance of the building such as light wells. However you will require building regulation approval to ensure that the proposed works are carried out to a safe standard. You can contact the building control office within your local council. They will give you all the relevant information. I hope that this helps. Best Wishes Peter
