Yes you can do that, however if there is any soot onthe wall you need to paint it with a stabilising solution ( don't know a trade name ) this turn the soluble sulphates in the soot to insoluble sulphates otherwise you will get a powdery substance coming through the plaster and you won't be able to stop it
