Crack in ceiling

Posted by Laura Woodland, on
Moved into a ground floor flat and noticed a thin crack running across the width of the ceiling of the bedroom. It also runs down part of the wall by the window. Should I be concerned and who can I ask for advice?

Notoriously difficult to diagnose without looking at it Laura, is it a specifically built block of flats. If so the method of construction will probably be concreate ceilings plastered over. If it's a house divided into flats, the construction method will be traditional timber beams in the ceiling. In either case it's probably a little settlement and certainly not worth worrying yourself about, except that now you know it's there it's rather annoying. Fill the crack with some of the new light ( in weight ) filler that's about. Go to a do it yourself store and feel the weight of the tubs. You need the one that feels as though there is very little in it, because it's so light. Fill the crack with a paint scraper and sand it lightly when dry, about 20 mins. Then simply paint it as normal. Make sure you put the top back on properly as soon as you have used it or it will go hard very quickly. Read the instructions before using. Best of luck JC
