Base for patio

Posted by Frazer Connor, on
I am looking for any info on what type of base to use to lay patio slabs down. It is 10 square metres and there is already compacted sand down. Should there be anything under the sand. Should I cement the slabs in or is it OK to put the slabs down on top of sand and fill gaps with sand or mortar. Or just lay them tight with no gaps. It doesn't need to be a professional finish, just looking to get something down. I was hoping to get them down without cementing them in so that they could be easily lifted in the future if they had to be for any reason. Thanks

Hi, You should start with a good 4" of sub base ie scalpings / lean mix concrete / the scalpings should be compacted, then you have a few options, you can lay the paving on sharp sand or building sand & cement or sharp sand and & cement . As for the joints you can butt them together but if they are not perfectly uniform in size your bond will work its way out , the best option is to leave a gap of about 10/15 mm then point with sand and cement . I would recommend that you get a landscape specialist or builder in to do this as it's not an easy task for a novice. Hope this helps and good luck. Jason Edifice Projects
