Hi Jennifer Go upstairs and look to se if there are any walls above it that it may be supporting if there are not check which way the floorboards run. If they run into the wall then the joist's run the opposite way. If they run alongside the wall then the joist's will run into the wall and therefore it will be supporting them. Best get a professional builder to look at it. It won't cost you anything for an estimate. JC
