hi. short term fix. Paint the chimney breast with an oil base undercoat when dry paint with coloured emulsion. This will stop any patching in the paint finish but want solve the salt problem. Long term. Strip the chimney breast of all its plaster, dot and dab plasterboard on to the breast, plaster skim, and paint. hope that helps.
