RSJ installation

Posted by Brett Rookard, on
I am looking to build a single storey extension at the back of my house which will require the rear wall being removed and the installation of an RSJ. I don’t want to be quoted for the full job as we will be completing a lot of the work ourselves. Ideally I would like the RSJ put in whilst the current wall remains so the house remains secure whilst the extension is being constructed. Does this sound possible? I have had one builder (unrelated to this site) tell me it is possible but that they are unable to work out the size of the RSJ required. Should the builder be able to tell me the RSJ needed and also what category should I put this job into? Thank you

Ditto. When it comes to selling your house you will need proof that the beam was calculated properly and a completion certificate from the council. This is for your protection really JC

Hi Bret Yes of coarse it's possible but no builder can tell You the rsj or universal beam to install You need a Structaul engineer to calculate the size This needs to be passed on to your local building control For approval Hope this helps Shawn Slb
