I want to bukd an extension but dont know where to start

I am serious about wanting an extension on my house. however, the planning portal is too difficult to follow. i live in a terraced house with living room at front and kitchen at rear. the kitchen is small, so no room for a dining table. I want to build on the back but am not sure if it is allowed. What should my next course of action be? I live in Leeds
