What does removing a load bearing wall consist of?

Posted by Oli Salisbury, on
We are considering the option of removing two downstairs walls (one load bearing, one non bearing) in order to create an open living space. I believe a steel joist will have to be inserted in the place of the load bearing wall. I assume this will sit underneath the upstairs floorboards - does this mean it will be visible from downstairs? One of the walls to be removed runs perpendicular to the party wall of the attached house - will this cause problems when inserting the steel joist? As we have never done this before, we are not completely sure as to the extent of work required, please could someone give us a rough idea of what we might need to budget?
