Preferred builder previously bankrupt

Posted by James Brown, on
Am I wrong to be nervous about dealing with a director that was declared bankrupt two years ago. I realise the building trade has been tough for a few years and I have no evidence of any wrongdoing. I'm looking to get about 30k worth of building works done and he wants 20% up front. I have never dealt with builders before (aside from 1k on a couple of small jobs). I don't want to start the relationship by declaring that I don't trust him (which really isn't the case) but neither do I want to hand over 6k+ without a little due diligence. Many thanks for any advice.

Put simply if you aren't absolutely sure don't go ahead, I ask for a deposit however this in the form of a payment to my main supplier for the delivery of materials on day 1 granted this doesn't protect completely but you do get a load of materials and if I were to jump ship then the customer has got the materials
