Interim solution

Posted by Robyn Heritage, on
It seems we may require some re-pointing to be undertaken as the internal walls are now showing signs of damp. I understand this is not the best time of year for this to be undertaken. Is there an interim solution that could be used until the weather is permissible for full repointing? At the moment it just seems to be a smallish patch on the south facing back extension to a 3 level Victorian house but we do realise complete re-pointing will be required next spring/summer. Many thanks

It perfectly acceptable to point at this time of year, providing the temperature is at least 5 degrees and rising. It obviously has to be dry and stay so for 24 hours or so. The mortar dries slower when the temperature is lower than 15 degrees and therefore doesn't have to be sprayed with water until it's set. Make sure the old mortar is raked out to solid backing and dampened to aid adhesion. JC
