Can you extent on top of a garage?

Can you extent on top of a garage. The garage part has already been extended from the original build, so I do not know about the foundations ie can they the extra load. So can this be found out with a survey and if the foundations are not suitable, what would be the next course of action?

Hi Simon the first course of action is to check if you will be allowed to build on top of the garage, it's probably worth speaking to your local building control officer. As regards the foundation you can dig some test holes to check depth of footing. Ed
