Method of laying patio slabs.

Posted by Linda Bolton, on
Is the spot bedding method of laying patio slabs suitable or could it cause subsidence and instability. Also I have a raised patio and they have run a pipe from a rain gully on my drive under a step to just inside the top of the patio with no outlet for the water. Will the build up of water cause subsidence.

Through out college and within civil engineering industry such as schools, hospitals. Spot bedding is not allowed and frowned upon, it isnt the correct method to lay slabs. The ground area should almost be screeded before you lay the slab. spot bedded slabs have a limited life span. And I cannot even believe what you are describing?! theres a rain water gulley with no outlet?! Its a tried and tested method over hundreds of years to expell water away from property and to ensure it does not collect in one specific area. All I can say is yes, long term it will cause subsidence. The most common cause of subsidence in a property is a cracked gulley pot/pipe near the property.
