Can 47x50 timber battens be used instead of 50x50 timber battens?

Posted by Ben English, on
I'm looking to clad the external solid masonry walls of my house with HardiePlank. Reading the installation instructions it states to use 50mmx50mm timber battens for the frame, but when looking for timber the closest everyone seems to stock for timber battens is 47mmx50mm. Is the 47x50 ok or have I missed something? Also if I do use the 47x50 which way round should the long side go? Cheers, Ben

Hi Ben most sawn timber will come regularised (sometimes called" easi edge") these days, that is why its slightly less than 50mm. This is to take out any anomalies from when the timber is sawn. It will be fine to use for the cladding, fix it with the 47mm side projecting out. Ed
