We are due to knock our kitchen into one do away with our downstairs bathroom and make one big room want to now how to do it and what rsj I need I did put a posting on but no builders Intersted as only wanted advice

You need to first find out if its a load bearing wall. Then if it is before you begin the demolition acro prop the joists and ceiling to bear the weight. The rsj should be the same width as the wall that was there. Most are a 4 inch I beam, this then sits on pad stones that you need to install. I urge you to get a professional to complete works.

Hi Roger you will need to have a structural engineer do calculations for the load to determine the size of steel required, you will also have to contact your local council's building control department as the work would have to conform to building regs. I would also consider if you are competent/have the required equipment to carry out structural work if you need to ask how to do the work required, a mistake could be very costly! I would advise you get someone in to cut the opening and fit the steel and then finish the rest yourself if you want to. Ed
