Renovations

Posted by Natalie Morgan, on
I've been given a quote by a builder doing some renovation work for me is it normal to give him 50% of the quote up front and the rest at the end?

Good morning, Each company has its own payment terms for works. If the company has detailed at what stage he wants the money and where he will get to with it and you are confident and happy with the builder then fine I assume this is a small project? I would recommend paying into the bank and getting a separate receipt. Personally I would never pay anyone this amount I would ask for the project to be set out in smaller stages, I wouldn't pay a penny u too they had started works, I have taken in many renovations, extensions, loft conversions and there needs to be a common ground whereby the money is never too far in either the customer or the tradesmens hands, interim payments are always necessary for a good project to proceed, for example on an extension ie 15k I would split this into 5 payments of 3k and I wouldn't ask for anything until the foundations are in and the final 3k would be on completion, doing projects this way eases my customers mind and they see they are getting value for money as the project takes place rather than a bulk payment and a few weeks of worry weather the tradesmen will disappear. You hear lots of horror stories regarding this but I always say the client has to take some responsibility for laying silly money out to a stranger. Hope this helps Kind Regards Andy LCS

Hi, What I normally do is requested a deposit in the first day of work starting. This would be to cover the cost of materials. If I take a big job I draw up a contact to be paid over certain stages. Hope this helps North east property care
